Privacy policy

The short version: we collect your email and your picks to run the contest; the sponsor gets your email because you agreed to that when you entered; and we don't sell anything about you to anyone. The long version is below.

1. What we collect

When you enter: your email address (required), a display name (optional; we generate one if you skip it), your picks and tiebreaker, and the time you locked. Automatically: your IP address, device and browser type, the pages you view on mainmarket, and the referral link that brought you, if any. We do not collect payment details from players; winners give payment information directly to our payments provider.

2. How we use it

To run the contest: sign you in, save your picks, score them, rank you, and pay you if you win. To email you the four contest emails: your sign-in code, your locked confirmation, kickoff, and results. To verify winners and meet tax rules. To keep the site working and fair, including spotting duplicate accounts and bots. To understand how the site is used, with our own first-party analytics and Google Analytics.

3. The sponsor

Some contests are presented by a sponsor. When you enter one, you agree, in the sentence next to the lock button, to receive marketing email from that sponsor. After the contest we give that sponsor your email address, your display name, and the time and wording of your consent. That's all. The sponsor never receives your picks, your IP address, or anything else, and only the sponsor of a contest you entered gets your email. You can unsubscribe from the sponsor's emails using the link in any of them, and unsubscribing never affects your entry.

4. Who else sees it

The companies that run our infrastructure on our behalf and under contract: hosting and database, email delivery, sports data, and payments to winners. They process your data only to provide those services to us. We'll share data if the law requires it, to protect players or the service from fraud or abuse, or as part of a sale or merger of mainmarket, in which case this policy still applies. We never sell your personal information, and we never share it for someone else's advertising.

5. Emails and texts

Contest emails from mainmarket (code, confirmation, kickoff, results) are part of playing; you can't opt out of them while you're entered. If you opt in, we also email you when a new contest opens; unsubscribe from those any time. If a friend invites you, you get one email with their invite and a link to never get invites again, and the link in that email signs you in without a code: it works once, it stops working when picks lock, and you shouldn't forward it, because anyone with the link can make picks as you. We create your account when you click it, not when the invite is sent. Sponsor emails are marketing and have an unsubscribe link. We don't send text messages.

6. What's public

Your display name, your rank, your correct-pick count and your tiebreaker guess appear on leaderboards. If you share your picks, the share page and image show your display name and your picks to anyone with the link. Your email address is never shown anywhere.

7. Cookies and analytics

We use a cookie to keep you signed in, and a first-party cookie (mm_sid) that keeps you on one ad for a day and lets us count unique ad views; it's random, isn't shared, and we store only a scrambled version of it. We count visits and events with a first-party analytics tool, and we use Google Analytics, which loads in your browser and sets its own identifiers. We never send it your email address, your picks, or the tokens in links we email you. When an advertiser requires it, our server tells them an ad was shown or clicked, without any cookie, IP address or account detail. Ad and sponsor links may carry the advertiser's own tracking once you leave our site; their site, their policy.

8. Your choices and rights

You can change your display name from your profile any time. Email hey@mainmarket.com to see the data we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account; we'll act within 30 days and confirm by email. Deleting your account removes you from future contests and leaderboards; we keep records of prizes we've paid you for as long as tax law requires. If you live in California or another state with a privacy law, you have the rights that law gives you, including to know, delete and not be discriminated against, and we don't sell or "share" personal information as those laws define it.

9. How long we keep it

Entries and picks: for the season they belong to, plus one year, so results and disputes can be checked. Consent records: for as long as a sponsor or mainmarket may lawfully email you, plus the time we need to prove consent. Ad view and click records: 90 days raw, then daily totals only. Payment and tax records: seven years. Analytics: 13 months for our own; up to 14 months in Google Analytics. Deleted accounts: removed within 30 days except for the records above.

10. Under 18

mainmarket is for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18; if we learn we have, we delete it. If you think a minor has entered, email hey@mainmarket.com.

11. Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is limited to the people who need it, and there are no passwords to leak because we don't use them. No system is perfect; if we ever have a breach that affects you, we'll tell you promptly and plainly.

12. Changes and contact
